Session aims

The aim of the session is to provide ‘top tips in managing anxious dental patients’ that can be applied by delegates in general practice.

Session objectives

In this session, delegates will benefit from the speaker’s wide range of training and experience in the field of dental anxiety management. The ‘tips’ will include clinical, technological, dental materials, psychological, behavioural and pharmacological

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session delegates will be able to:

  • Define dental anxiety, fear and phobia
  • Understand what conscious sedation options are available
  • Define hypnosis, trance and suggestion
  • Recognise alternative Local Anaesthetic techniques
  • Utilise basic relaxation, desensitisation and distraction techniques.
  • Understand how choice of materials can affect the management of anxious patients.

A – Effective communication with patients, the dental team and others across dentistry, including when obtaining consent, dealing with complaints and raising concerns when patients are at risk.

B – Effective management of self and effective management of others or effective work with others in the dental team, in the interests of patients; providing constructive leadership where appropriate.

C – Maintenance and development of knowledge and skill within your field of practice.

D – Maintenance of skills, behaviours and attitudes which maintain patient confidence in you and the dental profession and put patients’ interests first.
