Barry Oulton, B.Ch.D DPDS MNLP
Dr Barry Oulton owned Haslemere Dental Centre in Surrey for nearly 20 years, turning it into an award-winning practice with a reputation for outstanding customer service. In 2018 he sold the practice to the Portman Group and still works clinically three days a week.
In 2017, he founded The Confident Dentist Academy, created to help dental professionals learn effective communication skills and selling with integrity so they can have more impact and make a bigger difference, both professionally and personally. The Confident Dentist Academy offers face-to-face training, online courses and one-to-one coaching to help dentists and their staff improve their interactions with patients, and make their experience in the dental chair as comfortable as possible.
Barry obtained his BChD from Leeds in 1993 and his Diploma in Post-Graduate Dental Studies from Bristol in 2001. He has a masters from Aesthetic Advantage in West Palm Beach Florida where he subsequently became a senior instructor, lecturing in both the UK and US. He lectures for Septodont both here in the UK and in South Africa and other dental companies including S4S and Cerezen. Barry achieved the highest level masters qualification from Rosenthal Institute New York and also completed all levels of the Dawson Institute & Dr Clayton Chan occlusal connections in Las Vegas.
Ten years ago, Barry was inspired by a training programme he attended that demonstrated the combined power of human emotions, psychology and physiology, and culminated in him walking on hot coals. Barry saw the potential to use what he learned to improve the service he provides as a dentist. Since then, he has continued to expand his skillset and experience in a variety of disciplines and is now a qualified coach and experienced trainer, has become certified in hypnotherapy and is a master practitioner in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).
His latest venture, The Confident Dentist Academy offers a set of teachable techniques to help other dentists improve the way they communicate with their patients. The tips benefit patients and the dental team alike and, by combining the highest quality products with careful language and good technique, can even help in delivering effective pain management and the relief of dental anxiety. Barry’s courses demonstrate how building true rapport with patients, and others, leads to meaningful, long-lasting customer relationships. Aligned with the use of positive language, good listening skills and subtle persuasion, the dentist can make a good impression that translates into happy patients, a good working environment and, ultimately, sees profit increase.
